[L'Arc~en~Ciel]

L'Arc~en~Ciel is a Japanese rock band that was formed in 1991 in Osaka by tetsuya. They made their debut in 1993 with the album “DUNE,” which hit number one on the Indies charts. Next they made their major label in 1994 by releasing the video single “Nemuri ni Yosete” (Ki/oon Records). Over the years, they have released 36 singles and 11 albums. Their first million-seller was the album “True,” released in 1996. In December, 1997, they set a record by selling out their show at Tokyo Dome (capacity of 50,000) in four minutes. In 1999, the double album release of “ark” and “ray” sold 6 million copies (sold simultaneously in seven countries across Asia) and their “1999 GRAND CROSS TOUR” was viewed by 650,000 people (at 12 shows), while being broadcast to various countries across Asia.

In 2003, L'Arc~en~Ciel took to the skies and had their first overseas show at Baltimore in the USA, playing to 12,000 people. The next year, they played shows in Seoul and Shanghai to 10,000 people each and were a massive success. They played their 9th show at Tokyo Dome in November, 2006 with the “15th L’Anniversary Live” which was broadcast to 25 countries across the world. In celebration of their 15th anniversary, they re-released fifteen of their early singles, and all of them entered the Top 30 in the singles rankings. This was a new record for most singles in a Top 30 at the same time.

In April 2008 they started their “TOUR 2008 L’7〜Trans ASIA via PARIS〜” and played 10 shows in 7 cities across the world, including a tenth show at Tokyo Dome, to a total of 320,000 people. The Paris show was not only shown in Japan, but also broadcast on French national TV, and was a memorable event.

They became a part of history when their single “BLESS” was used as the NHK Vancouver 2010 Olympics theme song. And at midnight on December 31 2010 they played their first show in two and a half years, with the “20th L‘Anniversary Starting Live ‘L’A HAPPY NEW YEAR !’ ” show at Makuhari Messe. 2011 marked the 20th anniversary of the formation of the band.

This year L’Arc~en~Ciel played a historical two-day concert at the iconic National Stadium in Tokyo, Japan, which was also live streamed across the world in the U.S., UK, France, Mexico, Brazil, Hong Kong and Taiwan. On the first day 80,000 fans packed the stadium with a total attendance of 160,000 people in a span of two days, which was the largest recorded attendance at the National Stadium.
