LIVE REPORT: Japan Nite @ SXSW 2015

The last few weeks saw an estimated 75,000 people converge on Austin, Texas for one of the country's biggest music and media festivals, SXSW. Filmmakers, tech gurus and, of course, musicians from all over the world came to show us their stuff, bringing make-it-or-break-it attitudes to the heart of Texas in an effort to score that big deal. It’s crazy, crowded, and sometimes downright bizarre, but it has become a staple of Austin music culture and possibly the most anticipated event of the year.

Mahousyoujo-ni-naritai / 魔法少女になり隊

Mahousyoujo-ni-naritai was formed in 2014 as a five-piece commercial and creative team: KAJI BASIL (vocal), gari (VJ/vocal), MEIJIsan (guitar), UI VITON (gujitar), ADULT YUkun (bass).

The band sounds part metal, punk and EDM, while infusing elements of role-playing games, not only in their songs and lyrics, but also their videos and live performance, having won a prestigious contest for up-and-coming artists hosted by a major Japanese rock magazine merely four months since forming the band, and being invited to perform at ROCK IN JAPAN FESTIVAL 2014. In 2015, they’ve also been tapped to write a song for Shiritsu Ebisu Chugaku, one of Japan’s most in-demand idol groups.

As a side note, vocalist and magical girl-in-training, KAJI BASIL, was put under a spell by an evil witch, and now travels the world to find a cure for her predicament. In order to preserve her magical powers, she does not speak anytime other than singing, so please keep in mind that she will be unable to answer when spoken to.

Japan Nite US Tour 2015 - Celebrating 20 Years At SXSW2015!

The tour line-up is out! With 9 stops across the US there's a location near you! The 2015 tour kicks off in Austin, Texas as a part of the annual SXSW event. They've got a fantastic line-up this year, showcasing a variety of styles and sounds.You won't get a show like this outside of Japan anywhere else! Live Report: Yoshiki at SXSW Festival March 14, 2014

For those of you who have never experienced South by Southwest, it is, for lack of better words, fucking insane. Streets packed with people, air filled with smoke and a myriad of odors from food trucks sporting everything from pizza to kimchee. Doormen like carnival callers shout into the street as music filtered down to just its bass beats pours from the open door behind them.

Insane.

Band Feature: Jungles!!! from Red Bacteria Vacuum

Ikumi - Yagoromaru - 325 - Jasmine

Jungles!! from Red Bacteria Vacuum is an all-girl Japanese punk band from Osaka formed in 1998 currently consisting of IKUM!, 325, Yagoromaru and Jasmine. The band relocated to Tokyo in 2000. Their first EP Roller Coaster was released in January 2006.

They have gone through numerous member changes, notably with the major problem of filling in for the departing Akeming, their original drummer who left the band when pregnant with her first child. Katsu was later found to be the new drummer, but left early 2009. By April of 2009, Jasmine became the their permanent drummer, appearing in their new album and touring with them for Japan Girls Nite. Most recently Yagoroumaru has joined on as the band's bassist. The band has also re-presented themselves as 'Jungles!!!' changing their name from the former 'Red Bacteria Vaccum' in response to the new member line-up. 

The band performed in the US numerous times throughout the years, usually as part of BENTEN Label’s Japan Nite, an annual tour promoting Japanese indie bands in America. As part of their 2009 American tour, they played at the opening of New People, a building dedicated to Japanese culture in San Francisco. The group released their album, “Dolly Dolly, Make an Epoch” in October 2009. The band toured in the US once again in March 2010, appearing at SXSW as well as participating in the Japan Nite tour once again. Now as Jungles!!! they return to Japan Nite 2014.

Mothercoat has won a slot in the prestigious official showcase in SXSW, "International Day Stage", adding to another official showcase stage of "Japan Nite".

International Day Stage hosts some of SXSW's most unique and diverse talents from across the globe, on the fourth floor of the Austin Convention Center where all the SXSW Music Conferences will be held.
