[Bio]

The presence of her voice, haunting in just one listen, is tremendous.

Since making her debut in 2011 with single “Rokutose no Yoru”, singer Aimer has won rave reviews with her fragile but haunting voice and a tranquil yet expressive worldview.

At a tender age of 15, Aimer had a throat condition that had once made her give up her musical activities. However, after a few years, such an idiosyncratic experience turned out to give her a one-of-a-kind singing voice, which created a silent buzz and led to the resuming of musical activities in 2011 as a joint force with “agehasprings”, a group of creators who work with top-notch singers such as YUKI and Mika Nakashima to name a few.

In May that year, she released a cover album and the lead track, which was her rendition of Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face”, debuted at #1 on the iTunes Store Jazz chart. The album also peaked at #2. Then in September, she went on to make her major debut from DefSTAR Records with single “Rokutosei no Yoru”, following with her debut album “Sleepless Nights”, including the smash-hit songs “Re:pray “ for BLEACH and “Anata ni Deawanakereba ~ Kasetsu Toka” for Natsuyuki Rendezvous by receiving high acclaims.

Hitting the national charts, her 6th single, “StarRingChild” marked 3rd in the Oricon weekly chart, and her 2nd album “Midnight Sun” also appeared in the Top 10, by attracting the attentions with the theme songs of Mobile Suit Gundam UC, “RE:I AM” and “StarRingChild”, which are teaming up with Hiroyuki Sawano who also handles the soundtrack of the series. In 2014 Aimer released her 2nd album, “Midnight Sun” and mini-album “Dareka, Umi-wo” (collaboration with Yoko Sugano etc.), an ending them to Zankyo no Terror, and marked her 7th single, “broken NIGHT / hollow wORlD” which has a tie-in to Fate/hollow ataraxia, in the Oricon CD single weekly chart’s top 10.

A rising star at the moment, her 2015 will be more busy and full of attention, as she performed at the Shibuya Kokaido (Shibuya Public Hall) and other venues in her nationwide tour “Maiden Voyage", in which the tickets to all her shows sold out instantly. Recently she has performed at ONE OK ROCK’s stage, and has been complimented as “one of the most beloved artist” by Taka the main vocal.

The new 8th single features “Brave Shine”, the title track which is the opening song for the 2nd season of TV animation, Fate/stay night (Unlimited Blade Works). Also included are the acoustic version of “Kimi wo Matsu” (the theme song for TV special drama Kuroha –Kisou no Josei Sousakan and live recording of “Midnight Sun” from her first solo concert. The songs, which she almost “talks” into your ears with her husky voice, have a melancholy atmosphere.

Lineup changes everywhere! Is it in the water?

It seems lineup changes are the thing this summer and we have another one for The Dice. At their show earlier this month, vocalist MISS was conspicuously absent. It has since been announced that he has officially left the group effective immediately. The band will continue until August 21 with a support vocalist, after which they will take an activity pause.

Zonbi will also be seeing a vocalist change. Vocalist atom has left the group as of June 13 and the group have been touring with a mysterious support vocalist known only as Kansensha no K-san (Infected K-san). On June 23, K-san was officially added to the lineup, though his true identity will remain secret until their live on August 1 at Ikebukuro EDGE. I'm intrigued. Are you?

SAKURA announced at their one-man on June 18 that they will also be losing members. Guitarist Chihiro and Drummer Takahiro will depart after their performance on August 10. It seems the pair had a different idea about where the band should go and just couldn't continue with the group as it was. SAKURA seems to be taking it in stride, though, announcing their first anniversary one-man at Tokyo's International Forum Hall C, a 1500+ capacity venue.

And, another for the injured list. Kuroyuri to Kage bassist, K, will be out of commission while seeking treatment for an eye infection. It seems the infection is bad enough that it could cause blindness if not treated. The band will continue performing as scheduled. In the meantime, CLEAN YOUR CONTACTS! ^^
Now, for some better news. Last week, we reported on HOLLOWGRAM vocalist Ryo being injured in a car accident. It seems his surgery went smoothly and he is expected to return to the stage as scheduled. Depending on his recovery, some of the performances may be done differently to compensate for his injuries, but I'm sure he'll be back to 100% in no time.
Gonna be in LA this weekend? Make sure to hit up Anime Expo and check out Dir en grey drummer Shinya as he graces the catwalk for h.NAOTO. He will also be participating in a Q&A session with the designer. The convention takes place July 2-5 and tickets are currently $80 for all four days, but go up on July 1. Neo-traditional band WAGGAKI Band will also be performing, so this is an event not to be missed.
Hold onto your panties, ladies. I have the mother of all New Band Alerts for you. Brought to my attention just this morning, Buck Tick vocalist, Sakurai Atsushi, has announced the beginning of a solo project called The Mortal. Sounds like he's trying to convince us he's NOT a vampire. There's not a lot of information on the project as of yet, but they already have a handful of lives planned for November. Personally, I am squeal-my-head-off excited for this one, so I'll be watching it closely. And, as far as the whole vampire thing goes, I remain skeptical. ^^

And, that's the Quickie. At their one-man live at Akasaka BLITZ, LEZARD announced the release of their first full length album, Tokagetchu, on July 15. The album consists of six brand new tracks written exclusively for this album and will release in two versions: Iiko version and Waruiko version. Iiko version comes with a DVD with the PV, offshot, and 9 caligraphy videos while the Waruiko version comes with two additional original songs plus 5 bonus tracks of previously released singles.
Another cool new release that I'm super excited for, Litchi Hikari Club's Jesus Christ Hyperstar is slated for a July 29 release. It will appear in two versions, one with a DVD and the other CD only. The tracklisting hasn't been revealed yet, but I'm sure it will be awesome. And check out that Hakuei. Geesh.

A couple of cool release announcements via YouTube this weekend, starting with Nihilizm. Their latest full length album, aguere, releases October 28. They also announced a commemorative tour consisting of four shows, the final being held on November 25 at Takadanobaba AREA. Check the homepage for venues and details.

I'll just go ahead and plug my ears in preparation for all the screaming associated with this one. The Gazette has finally released details on the first movement of their Project: Dark Age, DOGMA. The album will, of course, come in a massive three disk edition which includes a 14 track CD and two DVDs containing the PV for the title track and DEUX, documentary and making of footage. The album drops August 26 and that big version comes in at a whopping 10,800yen, so save your pennies, folks.
On the tour front, we have MIYAVI with a European tour commemorating his latest release, The Others. The tour starts September 27 in London, includes 12 stops, and ends in Helsinki, Finland on October 16. I'm really hoping this evolves into a more inclusive world tour. Check the homepage for venues and ticketing information.
VAMPS will also be gracing Europe this fall as they join Apocolyptica on their Shadowmaker tour. The tour starts November 24 and includes 6 stops throughout the UK. Check the OHP for ticketing information.

Unfortunately, we just can't get through a week without a couple of sucks. This week, we start with the disbandment of BLITZ. The group will disband after their performance on November 7 at Shinjuku BLAZE. Though no real reason has been given, you can find the groups individual comments over at their OHP. They have a ton of lives left before the end, so be sure to continue supporting them until the last.

Next is the sudden and quick disbandment of Escapism. Just announced, the group will call it quits after their upcoming live this Thursday at Holiday Shinjuku. In their official statement, they cite musical differences as the reasoning and assure you there is no ill will amongst the members. I'm sure fans of Escapism will feel a little blindsided by this news, but we wish them all the best and hope to see the members again in future projects.

Here's a New Band Alert that had me squealing. Dir en grey guitarist, Die, has jumped on the bandwagon and started a solo project called DECAYS. There's not a whole lot of information on it yet, but he does already have a handful of shows scheduled in July and August with Sukekiyo and FAKE?. Make sure to follow them on Facebook and Twitter to stay up to date on any future developments.
SCREW has announced the release of the sequel to their previous mini-album, Konsui. Titled Kakusei, the album is rumored to be a contrast to its predecessor. After the loss of bassist, Rui, Byou said "the band died," leading to the formation of Konsui. Kakusei, however, is all about the future. The album releases August 19 and will be preceded by a set of pre-release lives open only to those who have pre-ordered it. The group will be sporting the Kakusei visual look and playing songs never before heard from the album. The group will also be available for handshakes after the show. Check the homepage for details and venues.
Unfortunate news for European An Cafe fans. It seems the band has been forced to cancel their appeance in Slovenia due to issues with their organizer. They were originally slated to appear at Sakuga Gaiden on June 20. If you bought tickets to the event and need to get a refund, visit An Cafe's official site for details.
Some scary news gleaned from social media chatter. It seems Ryo, vocalist of Hollowgram, has been injured in a car accident. I don't have any details, but word is his injuries are not life threatening, but do require surgery. He will be unable to perform at two upcoming shows with his duo project, TAG, but the shows will go on, featuring a DJ-style performance of the music. We will update you as information reaches us, but in the meantime, keep him in your thoughts and hope for a speedy recovery.
UVERworld performs live shows mainly in the Kansai area. They made their Tokyo debut in late 2004, and broke out with their major debut in July, 2005.

About their name, “UVERworld” A combination of “UBER”(meaning “over” in German) and “world” with the concept of wanting to always overcome past obstacles, along with future obstacles coming their way. With hopes to share with the world and create a powerful outlook on life, hopes that someday this philosophy can change the world. UBERWORLD became UVERworld adding character and a twist.

Their debut song, “D-tecnoLife” ranked 4th place on the Oricon Top Hits Chart. An instant smash hit, their sudden spotlight surprised many. Their second single “Chance!” also listed 5th on the Oricon Chart (In 2005, there was only 1 group who had two of their singles make it on the top 5 in a row). In January 3, 2006, they released their third single “just Melody”, followed by the release of their first album “Timeless” in February, 2006.

With a wide variety of genres, they took “rock” to the next level into their album which insanely attracted many fans. The album ranked 5th place in the first week of their release on the Oricon Top Hits Chart and was another smash hit! Through March and April, they went on a nationwide tour, (Such as performing at Shibuya AX, a total of 8 venues) with sold-out tickets on the day it went on sale. But the UVERworld freight train didn’t stop there! As soon as they finished their tour, they released their 4th single titled, “Colors of the Heart” (Opening for “Blood+”) which also ranked in the top 3 on the Oricon Top Hits Chart, the best ranking in their career thus far.

In August, the release of “Shaka Beach~Laka Laka La~” made it to the top 2 on the Oricon Top Hits Chart. The achievement was a first, for a single to be ranked second place without any ties to an anime, or drama theme song. November 2007 marked their release for the Wednesday weekly TV drama series from “Nihon TV”, “Hataraki-man”’s theme song titled “Ukiyo Crossing”. This song also ranked third on the Oricon Top Hits Chart. Their third album, “PROGLUTION” released in January, 2008 was a hit to all their fans and their popularity skyrocketed, successfully completing their nationwide tour. Their 10th single “Gekidou” which also ranked third on the Oricon Top Hit Charts was labeled as the symbol song for 2008. Their second ballad single titled, “Koishikute”, also a single that did not have ties with other media titles, ranked top 3 on the Oricon Top Hit Charts. Their 12th single, “Hakanakumo Towa No Kanashi” (Opening theme song for the anime, “Kidou Senshi Gundam 00” second season) is still playing on everyone’s top play lists. For the first time this single ranked first place on the Oricon Top Hits Chart!

The tickets for UVERworld’s first one-man live held at Nippon Budoukan sold out in a matter of minutes, a record-breaking success of their career. Their second performance at Nippon Budoukan, and also at Osaka Jou Hall, both with sold-out tickets, were a definite success! In February 2009, they released their fourth album titled, “AwakEVE”, an album that is filled with the energy and passion of their success.
I'm late, I know! A-kon happened! Better late than never, eh? Well, sort of. Looks like I'll be starting off with a stream of sucks, so hold on tight.

The first just announced yesterday and hit like an anvil. Moran has announced their disbandment following their live on September 21. After member losses and a planned hiatus, I guess it doesn't come as too big of a surprise, but it still hurts. The band still has a one-man tour coming up, so make sure to support them until the end.

It looks like Crimson Shiva is up for a member change. Drummer, Aki, has decided to leave the band after a specially scheduled live on May 30. It turns out he suffers from a congenital illness called Poland Syndrome that means he has significantly less muscle in the pectorals on his right side. This condition has caused him many problems due to the overuse of his right side and so he has decided to call it quits. The rest of the band will continue on as a four member group.

Project JILKA is also suffering from member illness, deciding to call it quits after only a short run. Bassist Sana suffers from Meniere's Disease, a disease that effects the inner ear. While he thought he had it under control, it seams to have relapsed and he feels the best thing to do is stop activities until he can find a better way to manage his illness. Vocalist Naoki plans to remain active, though, so keep an eye out for him in future projects.

On to better news, ex-ViViD vocalist Shin has reemerged with a new project called WHITE JUDAS. They only have one live scheduled so far, a performance at V-Nation on August 5, and no previews as of yet, but we are definitely excited about this one. You can find WHITE JUDAS on Twitter, but they have been pretty secretive so far.

Shin isn't the only one up to new things. ex-ViViD drummer Ko-ki also has a project in the works. The project is called ViX and is made up of Kazuki of REALIVE, Nao of Daizy Stripper, and ex-vNeu Hixro. Ko-ki has also started his own company called Jace, which stands for Japan Active Creation Entertainment. I am really looking forward to big things from him soon!

Alice 9 have announced a new fall tour that will take them throughout Asia and Japan, including an appearance at V-Nation on August 5. The tour will take place throughout September and October and tickets are now on sale for these shows as well as their 11th Anniversary live through their website.

SEKAI NO OWARI have announced they will be supplying the theme song for both Attack on Titan live action films. The first installment hits theatres August 1 and features the band's newest song, ANTI-HERO. The song will release on the single of the same name on July 29. The second movie, titled ATTACK ON TITAN End of the World, releases September 19. No word yet on which song will grace the opening credits of this one, but I'm sure it will be killer.

They aren't the only one to see their name in the movie credits. SuG's latest single, teenAge dream, will be featured in the horror movie, EYES, based on a short story by Suzuki Koji, author of popular Japanese horror film, The Ring. The film hits theatres June and the single, teenAge dream/Luv it!, releases July 15.

Good news for fans of Zin. Vocalist Riku, who has been absent from band activities for over a month due to bad health, made his triumphant return at their live on May 23 at Osaka RUIDO. This brings him back just in time for their 3rd Anniversary one-man tour running November 6-28 and hits four cities. Check the homepage for dates and venues.

So, this must be some kind of record. New band, SLINGER, who made their debut on May 1, are already finding themselves down a vocalist. It seems the group had been unable to contact vocalist KNIGHT since before their show on 5/17 and, due to his failure to perform, dismissed him from the band as of 5/18. The band is determined to continue despite this setback and we hope to see them back soon.

Another one for the suck list, BLITZ has announced they will disband after their live on November 7 at Shinjuku BLAZE. Before they go, they will be releasing a BEST album containing all your favorite tracks from their three years together. Blitz BEST 2012~2015 drops September 9 in two types.
Before I get started, today is Memorial Day here in the US, and I'd like to take a moment to thank all the soldiers and their families for their service to our country. Your strength and sacrifice is deeply appreciated.
Starting this Quickie off with happy news! Alice Nine has announced their official comeback with their 11th Anniversary live, Re:Birth, at Toyosu PIT on August 23. What this means for their independent incarnation, A9, I'm not really sure, but it's exciting nonetheless. Check out the announcement trailer and try not to squeal.
More great news for fans of R-Shitei. Drummer Hirotaka, who has been out of commission due to a bad sprain, is back in action just in time for their nearly sold out summer tour. Hirotaka's first show back was May 23 at Shibuya Ruido K2. Make sure to grab their newest single, Suicide Memories, which comes out June 3.

The last couple of weeks have been light on the sucks, but it looks like it's come back on us this week, starting with the hiatus of one of my favorite new bands, My Bacteria Heat Island. The group abruptly announced they will be taking a break after their oneman on July 20. While I personally haven't been able to confirm the reason, fan blogs are citing health problems. Whatever the cause, we hope to see the guys back soon.

Another hiatus announced for all girl group, Magromance. The group will pause all band activities after their live on July 12 due to member departure. They aren't specific as to who exactly is leaving and they only have a couple of events left before the end, so make sure to catch their current lineup while you can.

It seems Kamijo is running into problems on his world tour. Just one day away from his show in Sao Paolo, Brazil, Kamijo was forced to cancel his performance due to the lack of an artist visa. In order to make it up to their disappointed fans, Kamijo held a completely free meet and greet in leiu of the performance at a local crepe cafe. They are hoping the show can be rescheduled for another date, but no details have been released as of yet.

And now, a lineup change for Vanikill. It seems bassist, Tera, left the group on May 12, citing differences in musical direction. The rest of the band plans to continue with band activities without him. Tera himself plans to take some time off to find himself before jumping back into the business once again.

Back to the good news, Kiyoharu has a new solo album slated for release in October. No title as of yet, but it will be followed by a live tour kicking off in December and moving through March 2016. Kiyoharu TOUR Tenshi no Uta 2015 [21] starts on December 23 at Yokohama Bay Hall. Check the homepage for more dates and details.

We'll wrap things up with a very cool New Band Alert: RE/V! I haven't heard any music yet, but the linup alone is enough to get me excited. Former Velbet frontman, Riuki, will be taking the helm for this one, joined by ex-BLACKLINE and SAVAGE bassist, Jun and ex- hyper pocket drummer, Fumiya. I expect very cool things from these guys. Their ohp is up and they have a few lives scheduled, so if you're in the area, check them out and let me know how they sound!

BABYMETAL: T-DOT CONQUEST !!!

So ostensibly this was to be a review of BABYMETAL at the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto. But that’s too easy. Want some adjectives…?

How about Spectacular…? Ground-breaking…? Total…Mind…Fuck?

Too harsh?

Then let’s go with Unprecedented.

Since the release of their debut/self-titled album in February of last year, the reviews have been pouring in. Everyone, with the exception of a few lonely metal elitists (and there are fewer and fewer of those) seems to agree (even Rolling Stone). BABYMETAL is the most innovative act of the 21st century…at least to date.

Highlights from the Toronto show include “BABYMETAL Bucks” tossed by adoring fans during the performance of “Onedari Daisakusen”—

BABYMETAL BUCKS (photo: Josh Campbell)

This money was handed out in the queue prior to the mayhem. Like, thousands of them. A couple of days previous BABYMETAL had played Mexico City and the audience threw some 12,000 Mexican versions of same into the air. Apparently the Canadian goal was to beat this...I'm not sure if we did. But yeah, you can see them fly in the video.

Another point of interest would be the presence of the tiny, super kawaii BABYMETAL fan D’Arcy:

This kid had everyone’s attention. Dressed in BABYMETAL cosplay, she was near impossible to miss. Many photographers, from BABYMETAL’s official chronicler Dana “Distortion” Yavin to random fans in the line-up, took pictures of her. I’ve even seen pictures of her in Japanese fan videos at this point. Here’s a video of D’Arcy and her dad enjoying “Headbangya!!”—note the intense ear protection on the tyke. I passed D’Arcy and dad on my way out of the venue after the show. D’Arcy was perched on her father’s shoulders giving high-fives to passing BABYMETAL fans, the look on the kid’s face was priceless, suggesting she was the rockstar, and these were her people.
The setlist for the show was everything a hardcore fan could want—every major number was covered, the show lasting roughly 90 glorious minutes. This was most refreshing following the 30-odd minutes of festival performance BABYMETAL gave Heavy Montréal last August. This being said, a tight security presence at the Danforth Music Hall prevented the line-up from turning into the free-for-all party that was the over-heated insanity at Heavy Montréal.

So why is everyone losing their minds over BABYMETAL? At the outset they were dismissed as an anomaly, a fad, a fly-by-night, here-today-gone-later-today viral sensation…but that wasn’t to be the case.

BABYMETAL continue to grow in popularity around the entire planet. From my perspective, it’s really no surprise. I don’t really understand those who don’t like BABYMETAL. The band is pure joy. It would seem impossible to at least not smile at this act. During the Danforth show I occasionally caught myself laughing uncontrollably like some sort of maniac.

But BABYMETAL has that effect on me.
Some of the reviews I’ve read from the Danforth show (and other shows) stressed the unusual amount of women at a “metal-show”. This was certainly true. And perhaps this is where we’ve hit upon one of the many aspects of “fresh” and “original” and “unprecedented” that BABYMETAL epitomizes.

Let’s have a look at the BABYMETAL song “Megitsune”—

And now a glance at the lyrics (in English):

Megitsune (Female Fox)

Go! - Go! - Go! - Go! Go! Go! Go!
Go! - Go! - Go! - Go! Go! Go! Go!
Dressed-up Miss Fox
(Check it! Cheer up! Check it! Cheer up!)
waves her twin ponytails in the air.
(Fluttering! Cheer up! Fluttering! Cheer up!)
She pops and vanishes.
(Whirling! Cheer up! Whirling! Cheer up!)
Let her show her various aspects!
(Kon kon kon ko, kon kon ko kon!)
Go! - Go! - Go! - Go! Go! Go! Go!
Go! - Go! - Go! - Go! Go! Go! Go!
Ancient maidens,
you dance in the transient dream.
Getting over thousands of years,
you live today.
Ah, it's right. Always women are actresses.
We're not foxes, not deceiving,
but maiden-like female foxes.
Ah, girls are becoming more like an ideal woman.
Smiling at face, crying at heart,
saying "It's right", we never show our tears.
A fox, a fox, I'm a female fox.
Women are actresses.
Go! - Go! - Go! - Go! Go! Go! Go!
Go! - Go! - Go! - Go! Go! Go! Go!
Ancient maidens,
you sing in the transient dream.
Getting over thousands of years,
you live inside us.
Ah, it's right. Always women are actresses.
We're not foxes, not deceiving.
Maidens...
... shouldn't be underestimated.
Ah, girls are becoming more like an ideal woman.
Continuously, to keep blazing,
we shoot up the fireworks.
Ah, blooming and falling is the fate for a woman.
Smiling at face, crying at heart,
we're pure-hearted maiden-like female foxes.
Ah...

(And a thank you to Du Enki for the translation.)

And such is BABYMETAL…one moment singing about being late for school, or the number 4, or chocolate…the next sending a cryptic (if not poignant) message concerning the female role in society around the globe. Recently BABYMETAL performed their “Red” and “Black” Mass Concerts in Japan—the “Black Mass” Concert being only men, the “Red Mass” Concert being only women. This is BABYMETAL checking off yet another first—an all female-only metal concert…with an all female-only Wall of Death. A true first in rock history.

BABYMETAL somehow touches people. Be it joy or awe…or something deeper. We’ve looked at “Megitsune”, one of BABYMETAL’s monster tracks. Released in June of 2013, by the end of that month it had rocketed to Number 2 on the Oricon Daily Singles Chart, and would eventually peak at the number 14 slot on the Billboard World Digital Songs Chart. And ponder this…as “Megitsune” reached out across the world, a young girl and her piano in Germany reached back…

Maybe this sums up but one aspect of this incredible act’s ever-growing popularity…their ability to make people feel something…to make people feel anything.
So, we all know those boys in Golden Bomber are kind of crazy. Check this out. The band has announced the release of a body fragrance with their next CD. It's not what you think. Called, "Shinda Tsuma ni Niteiru" which translates to "like my dead wife," the fragrance (if you can call it that) is a response to fan complaints over their last CD which was released without pictures. Fans said, "since they don't play instruments, if there's no pictures, what are they there for?" Each version of the CD comes with a body smell from each member. Vocalist Kiryuin Shou recommends you don't smell them if you're feeling sick.
Fan favorite, MEJIBRAY, have announced the release of a new mini-album, VENOMS.app. The album releases August 5 in three types, the limited editions including either the PV or live footage from their upcoming live at Akasaka BLITZ on 6/21. This release signals the culmination of their three month consecutive release series that included the singles Nepenthes and Eiki.

Some more good news, YETI has become a foursome once again. Sawamura Hideki will join the lineup as guitarist, replacing the absent Aramaki Yukihisa. Their first live together will be May 20 at Ikebukuro EDGE.
This week heralds the return of visual kei circuit event, Shibuya ga Taihen. For those that aren't familiar, Shibuya ga Taihen is an annual music circuit that took place from 2009-2011. This year's even will take place August 10 and span across five clubs: Tsutaya O-EAST, Tsutaya O-WEST, Tsutaya O-NEST, Tsutaya O-CREST, and Shibuya MUSIC EXCHANGE. Thought the lineup has not yet been announced, it promises over 50 visual kei bands, so there's bound to be a few you want to see.

I was honestly surprised when I received this single in the mail... but I was overjoyed! I adore Sono's voice and just the overall dynamic composition style that is Matenrou Opera.

On April 8, Matenrou Opera released their maxi-single, ether. The first thing I HAVE to note about this single is how cool the jacket is. The lyric booklet is actually sitting in the little holster that is the band (as you see above) and there is a moon that also separates and you slide in behind them, building it as a 3 layer pop-up book in a way. Not to mention, the CD is kept iridescent with white printing over the top.

This single features 3 awesome tracks:

1. ether

2. Round and Round

3. ari no koushin

Before I diagnose each song individually, I have to say I unfortunately was unable to find translated lyrics in order to discuss the lyrical content. If you happen to find any, feel free to tell me so I can look into them!

Also, you cannot necessarily judge this single as a whole, since the style changes from track to track. I feel this single has a little something for all of your tastes.

1) ether
A very ethereal start to this single, which seems obvious considering the title is 'ether'. The beginning draws you in with Sono's beautifully echoed voice accompanied with violin and chimes. Then it gets down to business with a slightly crunchy, but still majestic, riff by the rest of the band. It picks up nicely into a symphonic rock pulse that Matenrou is no stranger to. The phrase "hikari no mukou e/to the other side of the light" is repeated throughout the song in the same echo style; as if Sono's voice wasn't angelic enough, now he is literally beckoning the listener in a heavenly call.

The whole song has the ebb and flow of a tide, with slight crunchy interruptions so you don't actually get carried away. The guitar solo, which bleeds into a similar violin and synth bridge, Anzi and Ayame do not disappoint and provide fantastic support for yet another angelic style change. There is a majestic build with the same lyrical call ("hikari no mukou e") into the final verse of the song.

Throughout, it has many falling actions with notes- Anzi, Ayame, and even Yo going at it while Yuu keeps pace. It fades out with Sono on a sustained note and the echo call continuing in silence for a bit, leaving the listening unsure of when it officially ends. Then suddenly you're on to the next track.

2) Round and Round
While in ether Ayame's synth isn't that noticeable, it makes its presence known here, pulsing with what could feel like a sci-fi soundtrack riff right in the beginning. This song is pure classic rock to me. I feel like I'm listening to a modernized hair band... oh wait, I am! Well, maybe not to the degree as say Aerosmith, but you catch what I'm saying.

In short, I'd love to hear this played live. It has such a stadium presence that would be sure to be the most fun song of the night. I'm a sucker for a good synth and honestly, Ayame has stolen my heart in this song, Sono's vocals being an easy second. In the chorus especially, Sono gets a bit rough with his voice, giving some bite to that angelic tone.

Mid-song (at about 2:35), there is a dramatic 'downfall' in tuning and tone before it is picked back up by Ayame's synth and Anzi begins to shred. The bridge has an easy, steady headbang feel to it, thanks to the build from Yuu, before Sono just sustains the most gorgeous note that I didn't want to end. But, it does and leads to the final chorus before the same dramatic downfall occurs once more, going more and more out of tune until the song ends in a slow death crawl. This is by far my favourite track on this single!

3) ari no koushin
Now we enter the heavy rock anthem song! It may be closely related to "Round and Round" in musical style, but it is still so different. It starts out with an even rougher Sono and then Anzi brings it all in with a cool riff. Sono seems a bit more sensual in the way he is singing this time around. Throughout the verses, it's only Sono, Yo, and Yuu with some occasional interjections by Ayame and Anzi that eventually build into the pre-chorus.

It keeps this pattern and feel up until about 2:09 where the bridge brings forth some layered vocal tracks that go by so fast and suddenly you're back in another pre-chorus. This section is followed by a wonderfully executed (and super jazzy) back-and-forth between Anzi and Ayame with Yo and Yuu backing them up the entire time until finally, the group can't take it anymore and they bust into a riff all together.

It ends with a sudden blip of sound, ending just as harsh as it began. Now, this song is my least favourite on the single, but it is far from horrible. For me, in looking at the other two, it just doesn't compare in what I prefer.

And that is Matenrou Opera's ether. I give it an A! While "ari no koushin" may be ranked 3rd out of my personal tastes on this single, I still found it enjoyable and hardly anything to take it down to a B. But maybe that's also because "Round and Round" is a near A+++ rating for me. Either way: It's a wonderful maxi-single that definitely deserves a listen! Especially if you love Sono's vocals and some good synthesizer work like I do.

FACT has announced that, after 16 years together, they will be calling it quits at the end of the year. They did, however, tease some solo projects in their official statement and they will be holding a final one-man tour which will take them through the rest of this year. Girl-fronted screamo band, Dazzle Vision, have announced their breakup. It turns out the group had already decided on their breakup at the end of 2013. Their last live will take place in June. Keep an eye on their official page for more details.
Now that ViViD has officially disbanded, it's time for the solo acts to begin, starting with guitarist Reno. Reno recently announced his first one-man show titled 'Guitar Life' to take place on his birthday, June 4 at Shibuya REX. I'm not really sure how a guitarist goes solo, but it should be interesting nonetheless.
Time for a super cool NEW BAND ALERT! Consisting of a couple of familiar faces, More includes ex-Gazette drummer, Yune, and ex-12012 bassist, En'ya, and has been playing secretly since April. They will make their official debut on June 25 at Takadanobaba AREA and will be releasing their first DVD, Hypno, the day before. Check out the preview. I dig it.

Right smack in the middle of their run with Nikki Sixx on SIXX:AM's Modern Vintage tour, VAMPS made a quick stop in Florida to perform in Monster Energy's Loudest Month series, rocking the stage during Ft. Rock in Ft. Meyers and Welcome to Rockville in Jacksonville. I caught up with Hyde and KAZ after their smoking set in Jacksonville on April 24 and, with the help of translator, Hiroki, chatted about touring with an American legend, performing in a foreign country and vampire evolution.

You guys have been playing a LOT lately. You’ve been very very busy. Do you do anything special to stay in shape, maintain your voice, anything like that?

H: We have kind of a hard time, of course. With the one man tour we get kind of tired, but everyday something new happens and it’s kind of refreshing.

Speaking of new things, Nikki Sixx recently played VAMPARK in Japan with you guys and now you are opening for him on his SIXX:AM Modern Vintage Tour. How did that come about?

H: Nikki knows that I’m a big fan of Motley Crue and Nikki Sixx. We recently had a big gig in Japan called VAMPARK Festival and we supported SIXX:AM and helped them get into the Japanese market. Now, we are with SIXX:AM because they are trying to give back for what we did for them.

Can we expect any kind of collaboration between you two in the future?

H: Well, KAZ might be doing something.

K: I can’t tell.

Me: Ohhhh. Secret?

K: Secret.

Festivals like this are always a very unique experience due to the wide range of fans in the audience. As a musician, how do you approach such a unique situation with so many different types of music fans in one place?

H: Well, in Japan, we are really big. Everyone knows about us and we’re treated really well. Like rockstar life. When we go outside of Japan, we are a totally new band. It feels like starting things from the beginning. This kind of situation reminds us of the beginning of things.

When you first started, did you ever think you would be playing in a place like this with 50,000 people?

H: Noooo.

K: When I started my music back in the day, everything I saw was on DVD on the screen. I thought, I wonder how it feels to be there. So, I imagined what it was like.

On this trip alone, if I’m not mistaken, you will be playing in every type of venue, from clubs to arenas, to festivals like this one. What’s your favorite type of venue to play in?

H: I like bigger places. Bigger the better.

Hiroki: Like Americans, eh? *laugh*

K: I like to play outside, but I don’t like it too hot.

Me: Florida is very hot.

K: Yes, very hot.

I know from experience how, when traveling or working in another country, you can sometimes feel like you’re on another planet. I know you guys have been here before, but is there anything that still confuses you or surprises you when you come here?

H: I’m surprised that there is a skiing place only two hours away from LA.

K: In the US, there are a lot of rock musicians. That surprises me because, in Japan, there aren’t a lot of rock musicians. It’s only pop. Not a lot of rock. When we come to places like this, it’s all rock.

Your latest album BLOODSUCKERS, has just been released internationally with lyrics recorded in English. You did the same thing with SEX BLOOD ROCK AND ROLL. Do you believe it will help your music reach a broader audience?

H: Singing in English is a better way to tap into the US market. When I sing in English in Japan, most of the fans can’t sing along. But here, I see the audience sing our songs in English. I like that. It feels like we are getting closer to the US audience.

You guys use a lot of vampire imagery in your look and music. What is it that draws you to this imagery?

H: I’ve always liked the whole concept of vampires. One day, I thought if vampires are performing on the stage, that would be great. That’s why we started.

The BLOODSUCKERS album combines this vampire imagery with another of my favorite thematic elements, pirates. These are two things that seem, at least to me, almost contradictory; the vampire representing something damned and the pirate representing freedom. What inspired you to bring the two together?

H: Because we would die! *laugh* We are vampires, obviously. But, we do evolve. We are standing here outside under the sun and we are still alive!

Several of your songs give a sort of vampire’s-eye view of humanity. Vampire Depression from your self-titled album, is a vampire’s frustration over the human condition while Vampire’s Love from BLOODSUCKERS is a vampire looking more longingly into the human world. Does this reflect a progression in your vampire’s world view?

H: From the point of view of a vampire, human beings are so complex. Sometimes there are a lot of paradoxes going on. Sometimes you are killing each other. So, it’s interesting seeing humans from a vampire’s point of view. That’s what the image is about.

Well, now that we've got the important ones out of the way, how about a few silly ones? If you weren't a musician, what would you do?

K: Professional snowboarder.

Me: You skateboard, right?

K: Yes.

Hiroki: He’s really good at it!

H: I would work in a host club.

Hiroki: He would make a lot of money, right?

Me: Musician, host, same thing, right? *laugh*

Name three things you can’t survive without.

H: Sex, blood, rock and roll. *laugh*

If you could make music with any musician, living or dead, who would it be?

H: Jesus Christ.

Everyone: Ohhhhhhh!

K: Jimmie Hendrix.
